I thought this week we should take a look at the one system in our body that is utterly essential to our healthy survival. This system is The Immune System.

And what exactly, you might ask, is the Immune System, and where is it located in our body?

Well, our Immune System is our first line of Defense, the System that protects us from disease, and, if we do get sick, it helps heal us.

It is located in various parts of our body. Its organs are many and most important, and each performs a specific function relating to our health:

The Thymus is in charge of our immune activity

The Lymphatic, its fluids and its nodes filter, circulate, and get rid of waste, the Lymphatic also produces Lymphocytes.

The Liver cleanses toxins from the blood,

The Spleen facilitates the cleansing of dead red cells.

The Appendix is basically a huge Lymph Node!

The Bone Marrow manufactures white blood cells that fight infections.

Many herbs enhance the Immune System in general.

Most protect against toxins.

They have anti-tumor activity.

They restore possible general debility of the System.

They serve to reduce stress, and serve as Adaptogens. i.e..

—They act as stimulants for the Immune System.

—They can be used for long periods of time.

 

Best Herbs for Immunity

 

My most favorites are: 

Ashwaganda (mostly the root)—coming to us from India and North Africa.

Properties:  Immune tonic, Nervine Sedative, Anti-inflammatory, Anti-bacterial, Anti-oxidant, Anti-Tumor, Insomnia reliever (when stress is involved) – avoid in pregnancy.

Astragalus (root)—(Chinese origin)

Properties:  Adaptogen, Antibacterial, Anti-viral, Immune Enhancer, Tonic.

Echinacea:

Properties: Stimulant, Anti-inflammatory, Analgesic (helps with pain).

Eleuthero (Siberian Ginseng):  One of my very favorites!

Properties: Adaptogen, Antidepressant, Anti-fatigue, Anti-stress, helps with Endurance, Mental Clarity stimulant.

Reishi: a mushroom with amazing healing qualities! Another of my most favorites!

Properties: Anti-inflammatory, Anti-tumor, Anti-viral, Analgesic,  Anti-bacterial, reduces stress, helps with Bile issues, Immunity stimulant, tonifies the Spleen and Thymus organs.

Rhodiola:

Properties: Adaptogen, Cardiotonic, Endocrine tonic, Adrenal protector, Anti-fatigue, Anti-depressant, Mental Stimulant, Nervine, Anti-Stress.

The above are some—but NOT ALL!—of my favorite Immune System botanicals.

Also, the Immune and the Adrenal Systems are very closely associated, so a lot of these herbs would be excellent for both systems.
