demystifying Cancer by Brian Clement, PhD, LN and Anna Maria Clement, PhD, LN Co-Directors, Hippocrates Health Institute
Hippocrates Health Institute has led in the development of life and dietary improvement in a clinical setting for more than half a century. We have learned through the years that the majority of all diseases can be reversed through advanced lifestyle therapy.
The Immune System is the body’s response against foreign invaders. It wants to recognize and get rid of alien substances. It is a very wide ranging, specific system in deterring exactly what is foreign. It also has memory. What we are exposed to starting at embryonic development will be imprinted into immune function throughout life
There are more than 67 million new cases in the world each year. It is the second leading cause of death in America, right behind heart disease, and it may soon be the first.
Is cancer a genetic disease? Genes, not necessarily those inherited or congenital, less than 5% are inherited. It is a genetic damage that occurs in our somatic (body) cells rather than in our germ cell. DNA is a mutable molecule. If DNA were made of steel, it could not change. But it is a fragile molecule – easy to damage, easy to change (mutate). Natural selection could occur so we could evolve. Cancer results directly from changes in the DNA. Cancer should be looked at as a micro evolutionary process and it is very basic. It is taking place on a molecular level and there is natural selection of the fittest gene. In this case, some of these genes are bad for us. Just as evolution is the natural selection of the fittest genes in normal processes, it is also the case when cancer is getting out of control.
80% or more of all cancers are environmentally caused. Industrial and agricultural chemicals are the leading cause of many cancers. Ionizing radiation(magnification of sun UV and UA rays) is another source of injury to our DNA. sexually transmitted viruses cause cervical cancer and many authorities now believe they are linked to a wide variety of many other forms. These environmental carcinogens are the ones we can prevent. (Smoking!) Insecticides, pesticides, industrial chemicals – we have brought this on ourselves. Common to all cancers is that cancer is a failure of the stem cells to differentiate. Cancer does not start in mature cells. A fully mature cell can only be that cell or die. It cannot become a cancer cell. Most cells only replicate 30-50 times in their lifetime.
The usual route of travel for cancer is to the bone, brain, and vital organs like the lung and liver How do these cells get injured? There are three categories of carcinogens in our environment and they can harm our somatic cells: 1. Chemical carcinogens 2. Biological Carcinogens 3. Physical Carcinogens
1. Chemical carcinogens Chemical carcinogens, including chloride, insecticides, and pesticides. Thousands of chemicals can prevent us from replicating our DNA properly. Stem cells are now dividing and it wants to line up the same DNA. The chemical molecule locks on to the DNA and stays there. Mutation is there and when the DNA unzips and tries to replicate, it cannot read it, so it will be wrong, leaving errors in the DNA. When the cell replicates it will repeat the error.
2. Biological Carcinogens Biological carcinogens like viruses and bacteria (i.e. H-Pylori, herpes virus etc.) stimulate the rapid production of repair cells in the stomach and other organs can cause cancer. Viruses come in DNA or RNA-retro viruses. DNA viruses – Hep B, HPV, are common viruses. DNA viruses have a gene that tells its machinery (cells) to replicate very fast. It gets in your cell, replicates and the immune response will kill it; yet it has a gene that gets left behind that sparks replication and cancer. RNA viruses, like HIV, have already invaded a cell that has cancer(even healthy people harbor thousands of cancer cells). They successfully replicate and they pick up that gene that the cancer cell tells it to replicate fast and take it into their genome. They then move on and drop it on another cell – hitchhiking.
3. Physical Carcinogens Physical carcinogens, such as radiation and ultra-violet light, are energy destructors and cause disruptions or a break in the DNA photon frequency. It nails the DNA. Asbestos is like placing spear into the cell.
Men eating a lot of fish with high levels of omega 3 were more than twice as likely to develop aggressive prostate cancer as those consuming small amounts to none. Prostate cancer is the 2nd leading cancer in men, after lung cancer.
A recent study reported in The New England Journal of Medicine stated that consuming one alcoholic beverage (of any type) per day, on a consistent basis, raises your risk of developing cancer by 10%. Two drinks per day increase the risk by 30%.
Heavy metals are invisible particles that saturate our entire environment. Air, water, food , clothing, residence, and work place are generally contaminated with these disease causing microscopic pieces that enter our body and play havoc on our health.
Planet earth is further contaminated with the 2,000 newly created chemicals each year that together with other man made chemicals manifest tens of thousands more. Our misuse of heavy metal and thoughtless mining also introduce metal toxins into the eco-systems Mercury is the most deadly of all toxic metals. It accumulates in our brain, heart, kidney, and endocrine glands. This can result in memory loss, anemia, heart and liver concerns, and it can melt myelin sheaths of the nerves.
Toxic Metals (cont’d) A silver filling is 50% mercury and the EPA found that one filling is enough to close a 10 acre lake if it was there. Mercury fillings started in the early 1800’s and the few dentists that used it were called quacks. Mercury in German is Quack Silver. Now dentists that take it out are called quacks. It is found in adhesives, air conditioning, fabric softener, floor wax, cosmetics, seafood, laxatives, and tattoos. A long time ago, the hat makers who use felt with mercury slowly went insane – the Madhatter.
Toxic Metals (cont’d) Lead is contained in paints, insecticides, pottery, toothpaste, plastic, gasoline, batteries, newspaper, canned foods, chocolate, etc. It accumulates in the brain, liver, bones, kidney, and spleen. It can alter behavior and intelligence. Nickel can be found in stainless steel cutlery, pots and pans, and dental fillings. It accumulates in bones, kidney, sinuses, brain and the immune system. Chronic nickel toxicity could lead to skin conditions. Arsenic is in cigarette smoke, laundry detergent, beer, seafood, drinking water, wine, clothes, and wall paper. It accumulates in the liver, kidney and lungs. Cadmium is found in soft drinks, pesticides, fungicides, plastics, rust-proofing, rubber, cigarette smoke, water softener and accumulates in the kidney, prostate and eyes.
Toxic Metals (cont’d) Uranium can cause cancer and birth defects. Since Hiroshima, Chernobyl and now recently Japan, this toxic radioactive dust ends up in all of us, since we all share one atmosphere. As the number of X-rays and CT scans performed on people has soared, these imaging tests now are responsible for about 50% of the radiation North Americans are exposed to – up from 15 % in 1980. (The New York Times) Aluminum is used in water filtering, flocculation (to remove dirt), which it also does to our blood, causing stroke and heart attack as it tries to remove our white and red blood cells. It accumulates in our bones, kidneys and breasts and causes anemia. It is found in deoderants that glue our sweat glands so toxins cannot get out, that could lead to breast cancer. Aluminum in pots, pans and foil can cause Alzheimer’s.
Toxic man mined debris Toxic man made elements are very difficult to get rid of because they become part of our body at a cellular level. They look like familiar minerals, so the body tries to use them like a nutritional element. • Mercury —> Selenium • Lead —> Calcium • Cadmium —> Zinc • Aluminum, Nickel and Uranium —> Magnesium
Toxic Chemicals (cont’d) Toxic clothes – eight out of 10 common baby products contain flame retardant chemicals that could cause cancer and brain damage. (Duke University) Car seats, high chairs and strollers contain cancer causing and mind altering chemicals. all of this insanity can be avoided by making common sense life style choices.
Acrylamides are naturally occurring chemicals derived when cooking food. Even organic, plant-based foods have these compounds. Acrylamides have been internationally established as carcinogens. This new scientific understanding bolsters once again the inherent need we have to consume most, if not all, of our diet raw. Stockholm University pioneered this research at the turn of the new millennium.
Another leading cancer journal reports that 3–4 alcoholic beverages per week increase the risk of breast cancer by 34%. In the women who develop breast cancer and continue to drink, there is a 51% increase in mortality.
“Numerous important findings show that cancer cells can readily metabolize fructose to increase proliferation. This has major significance for cancer patients given dietary fructose consumption, which indicates that efforts to reduce refined fructose intake or inhibit fructose-mediating actions will disrupt cancer growth.” —UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center
The skin is the body’s largest organ, with an estimated size of two square yards. Along with the liver, kidneys, lungs, lymphatic system, colon and blood, the skin works to remove built up toxins and waste, maintaining optimal health. In order for the process to work efficiently, proper care must be taken to ensure that the skin is healthy and uncongested.
There is no doubt that negative emotions play a central role in causing physical disease. Millennia ago, Asian physicians addressed this in their health system.
Liver = Anger This manifests all forms of cancer.
Kidney = Fear, Worries, Infertility This manifests many forms of rheumatism, arthritis and inflammatory concerns such as psoriasis.
Lungs / Large Intestine = Grief, Sadness This manifests problems in the lungs, intestines, digestive tract and emotions.
Heart / Small Intestine = Love, Joy Lack of heart and small intestine health creates poor circulation depression and greater psychological disorders.
Our body’s anatomy is a gathering of remarkable systems that work together in the quest to allow your health to flourish. When we maintain them well by exercise, whole food nutrition and proper hydration the body responds by aging slowly and giving much. Develop a positive outlook and avoid the entrapment of the noxious world we live in.
