While the use of boswellia resin dates back thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine, it is only in recent decades that the full potential of extracted boswellic acids has been studied in earnest. Unlike conventional drugs which usually target one pathway, boswellia affects multiple pathways in the body which makes it more effective. But, one of its most significant benefit is its ability to block a particular inflammation pathway called 5-LOX (5-lipoxygenase). 5-LOX inflammation is associated with many conditions, including allergies, asthma, arthritis, and digestive diseases such as, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s, and Celiac disease. Boswellia is also being investigated in cuttingedge apoptosis research and has been shown to have the ability to inhibit uncontrolled cell growth.
Why Stopping 5-LOX Matters
When we hear the word “inflammation” we typically think about sore muscles or allergic responses—and we’d be right, but inflammation is also associated with many other diseases. Inflammation, at a cellular level, can easily be considered an underlying cause of virtually every disease that inflicts in the body.
Boswellia is remarkably effective in fighting 5-LOX inflammation. That’s important because 5-LOX enzyme activity can lead to inflammatory digestive, respiratory, and cardiovascular conditions if left untreated.
Inflammation—The Root of Chronic Disease
Inflammation doesn’t just cause joint pain, it can also cause disease throughout the body. Fighting inflammation effectively can sometimes make the difference between life and death.
Asthma, Allergies, Bronchitis, and COPD: Boswellia has been shown to stop the reactive inflammation response that creates asthma and allergy symptoms. It also reduces inflammation in lung tissue.
Brain and Memory: Inflammation can damage brain cells, promoting Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive problems. Boswellia can increase neuronal volume, boost learning, and enhance memory.
IBS and Irritable Bowel Disease: Inflammation in the digestive tract is responsible for the painful, unpredictable symptoms of many intestinal diseases, including autoimmune conditions. Boswellia stops inflammation triggers, which can reduce the occurence of the inflammatory “cascade effect” that makes these diseases so difficult to treat conventionally.
Heart Disease: Chronic inflammation and oxidation are common causes of cardiovascular disease. Using Boswellia can reduce inflammation and help prevent further degeneration.
Joint Pain: Inflammation causes pain and destroys joints. Because boswellia stops inflammation, it can help joints heal faster and keep damage from getting worse. Combined with curcumin, it has been shown to relieve osteoarthritis pain better than prescription drugs.
Choosing Your Boswellia
Like many botanicals, boswellia contains specific compounds that are associated with the herb’s beneficial effects. The most active and beneficial of the boswellic acids are known as AKBA (Acetyl-11-keto-B-boswellic acids). However, not all boswellia extracts are equally beneficial, such as betaboswellic acid—one of the naturally occurring compounds in boswellia that is actually pro-inflammatory. Leaving beta-boswellic acid at its natural levels, as you’d find in unstandardized extracts, can mean that up to 25% of the herb would have an inflammation-causing compound and that would be extremely counterproductive.
I recommend using a standardized boswellia extract, so that you’re getting at least 10% AKBA and virtually no beta-boswellic acids. This way, you get the best of both worlds—a true, complete boswellia with all of the good components you need, but with no artificially high levels of AKBA or potentially dangerous amounts of betaboswellic acid, which are commonly found in unstandardized products.
BosMed 500 features an advanced form of boswellia – BosPure®. It starts with carefully tended boswellia that is uniquely standardized to provide up to 10 times more AKBA than unstandardized products, which may have as little as 1% of this vital component. This standardization also means that BosMed 500 has virtually no pro-inflammatory betaboswellic acid, which would interfere with its optimal effectiveness. Because of the advanced nature of this clinically studied extract, it provides more of what is needed and less of what is not.
Bos-Cur contains a blend of clinically BosPure® Boswellia and BCM-95® Curcumin, each with up to 10 times the effectiveness of plain or unstandardized extracts. BosPure® Boswellia features reduced levels (less than 5%) of β-boswellic acid, along with standardized levels of at least 10% acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA)— both of which help to greatly increase the effectiveness of the extract. Curcumin is an excellent compound, but it is not typically well absorbed. The specialized extract in this formula, BCM-95® Curcumin, is different. It is blended with turmeric essential oils, which have been clinically tested and shown to have up to 10 times the absorption and better blood retention time than the standard 95% curcumin extracts.
If you are looking for a very effective, natural remedy with antiinflammatory abilities you couldn’t find a better extract than boswellia. Inflammation has been linked to many diseases throughout the body, but with the right course of treatment it can be effectively managed. Boswellia has been shown to stop inflammatory responses in the lungs, it can enhance neuronal volume, boost learning abilities, increase memory, stop inflammation in the digestive tract, and it can even help joints heal faster as well as prevent damage from getting worse. So if you have been struggling with chronic illnesses due to inflammation, boswellia may be the answer you have been looking for!
